Project Overview&nbsp;︎︎︎ Research shows that context, rather than conscious effort, is what prompts repeated behaviours. Furthermore, adherence is sustained by positive emotional associations rather than a practical understanding of treatments. Consisting of two modular devices, Cue harnesses the power of context by transforming the user’s environment through light and haptics, customizable through its companion app. Friendly and discrete, its appearance as a pleasing design object helps users form positive emotional connections to their new routines. Poor medical adherence (one’s ability to follow treatment regimens) not only directly impacts quality of life, but can come with a significant financial burden, further adding to stress and impacting health outcomes. Despite our best intentions, these and other routines are often difficult to sustain in the long-term and are influenced by a dizzying array of psychological factors. Project Overview&nbsp;︎︎︎ Conceived of as a two-part collection, with one volume written in English and one in Japanese, the total work reflects on the nature of the persona and how it changes between languages. Project Overview&nbsp;︎︎︎ Each year, the arrival of early summer in Japan brings with it a sweet seasonal pastime: the brewing of umeshu, a golden liqueur made from unripe Japanese plums, rock sugar, and shochu. With its rich colour and aroma, along with an approachable 10- 15% alcohol content level, it’s a domestic favourite that remains largely unknown outside of Japan. Matsuri serves as an excellent introduction to this iconic summer drink. As a maker of things and an amateur knitter, I’m often dismayed at the amount of packaging waste that is produced at the start of a new project, so I set out with the goal of developing a packaging product where every element is considered, and every feature has a second life. The kit’s belly band features eye-catching colour combinations and graphics on the outside, with instructions and a pattern for completing 3 turk’s head knot coasters printed on the inside, saving both space and material. The belly band is made of a durable but thin card stock, which means that users can even flatten and store it for later use in making more coasters. Tying the packaging together on top is a utensil rest which uses strategic holes placed in its sides to allow for string to tie snugly around the package, ensuring the contents remain inside while in transit. Smaller packages of rice were often tied together at the top with long pull taps, forming a sort of handle that users could grab to bring their purchase home. Letterforms were developed over a month-long period, after which sizing, weight, and interaction between individual characters was further refined. Project Overview&nbsp;︎︎︎ Printed on transparencies and collected loose-leaf in a folder, each page can be viewed by holding it up to the light. It is formatted in bitmap as a nod to visual field tests, which are used to discern blind spots. Its type is set to be somewhat unyieldy, which forces the reader to proceed slowly, in effect mimicking the experience of trying to read with certain types of visual impairments. Luminance was composed stream-of-conscious, with a focus on conveying the mood and impressionistic subjectivity of an unfamiliar experience manifesting solely in the interior world of the mind. Thoughts wander, connecting in peculiar ways, while images - my own primary mode of knowing - flash by, unexplained but intuited whether real or not. The primary visual metaphor is that of the moon, whose phases pass by imperceptibly, always hanging overhead, but difficult to fully comprehend in its viscissitudes . The tight turnaround for this project’s deadline made for an excellent experience in typpographic instinct and experimentation with manifesting psychological changes with subtle differences in layout Project Overview&nbsp;︎︎︎ Informed by Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain, Memento is an editorial collection framed around an honest and unflinching examination of mortality. Photography and illustration range from whimsical to mysterious, exploring the different angles by and lenses through which we can consider death and dying.
